Inclusive Recreation
Â
Inclusion starts with belonging.
Every child and young person deserves opportunities to play, connect and participate in their community. InREC helps recreation teams turn that belief into everyday practice.
Why we started
For our family, inclusion is personal.
Lana is a Registered Physiotherapist with a special interest in pediatrics and the founder of Oscar’s Place, a children’s rehabilitation centre. She is also Oscar’s mom. Oscar has a genetic diagnosis and significant developmental delays.
When Lana tried to register Oscar for a camp advertised as “all abilities welcome,” he could not participate because he did not meet a requirement to follow three-step instructions.
That experience revealed a gap between welcoming words and opportunities to participate.
Lana went on to develop inclusive summer camps at Oscar’s Place, bringing children of different abilities together through play and sports. But the need extended far beyond one centre.
Two sisters. A shared purpose.
Lana partnered with her sister, Sarah, to create InREC: Inclusive Recreation, Education and Community.
Together, we bring clinical knowledge, communications experience and a family perspective to a shared goal: helping recreation teams create environments where more children and youth can participate and belong.
We understand that staff want to help. They also need practical training, useful resources and support to respond confidently in everyday situations.
Helping teams get READY
READY brings that purpose to life through practical, on-demand training for recreation staff.
It helps teams build relationships, recognize barriers, support communication and adapt activities. Everyday Inclusion Tools help staff put their learning into practice, while the Leader Resource Hub supports leaders as they introduce READY and reinforce inclusive practices across their teams.
Our goal is to help recreation teams make “all abilities welcome” something children, youth and families can experience.
More opportunities to participate. More connections. More belonging.
